Is Vegecore Vegetarian? A Straight Answer (And What's Actually Inside)

Short answer: yes. Every Vegecore meal and sambal is suitable for vegetarians — and in fact goes further, because everything we make is 100% vegan. No meat, no seafood, no dairy, no egg, no belacan.

But "vegetarian" means slightly different things to different people, especially in Malaysia. So here's the full answer, including the one thing you should know before you order.

Vegetarian vs vegan: what's the difference?

Vegetarian usually means no meat and no seafood. Vegan goes further — no animal products at all, so also no dairy, eggs or honey.

Vegecore is vegan, which means it clears the vegetarian bar comfortably. If you're vegetarian and eating our food, there's nothing in it you're avoiding. Our sambals contain no belacan (shrimp paste), which is what catches most people out with Malaysian food.

The important part: our food contains garlic and onion

Here's where we want to be completely straight with you.

Garlic and onion are part of the rempah — the spice paste that gets pounded and slow-fried at the start of every Malaysian dish. It's not a shortcut ingredient or a filler. It's a large part of why rendang tastes like rendang.

Most vegetarians eat garlic and onion without a second thought. But some don't. If you follow a pure vegetarian diet in the Buddhist or Taoist tradition (素食), a Jain diet, or a sattvic Hindu diet, you avoid the five pungent roots — garlic, onion, leek, chives and shallot.

If that's you, Vegecore isn't suitable, and we'd rather tell you here than have you find out after ordering.

It's also why you won't see a "vegetarian" badge on our product pages. The word carries an implied no-garlic-no-onion meaning for a lot of Malaysians, and we don't want a label doing quiet work we can't stand behind. We say vegan, and we tell you about the allium.

So what's actually in it?

Real, whole-food ingredients, not mystery protein:

No added preservatives. Two-year shelf life, thanks to retort processing rather than chemistry. Ready in one minute, or straight from the packet if you can't be bothered heating it.

Is it Halal?

Yes. Vegecore is fully Halal-certified, alongside GMP and HACCP food-safety certifications.

Allergens

Our products may contain soy and wheat, and are processed in a facility that also handles egg. Check the individual product page for the specifics on each dish.

Who Vegecore is actually for

Vegetarians, vegans, flexitarians, people doing meat-free Mondays, people who just want dinner sorted in a minute, and Malaysians living far from home who miss the food more than they expected to.

We're not here to convert anyone. We make Malaysian food that happens to be plant-based, and we'd like it to be the easy choice rather than the worthy one.
